MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS > WINDS > FRENCH HOSE

The French Hose is another brass family (aerophone) instrument to add to our orchestra.  Now we have the Tube Trumpet, French Hose, and Tube Trombone.  All we need now is a Tube Tuba...

YOU WILL NEED:

THE HOSE

  • A length of garden hose, preferably 5/8” – 3/4” width, if smaller than that you must have the screw-end “mouthpiece” (the part that screws onto the pipe).

  • Note: Sometimes it can be difficult to blow through very small hoses, so consider other ways to expand the end of the hose if you don’t have the screw-in part.  You could, for example, cut off the top of a plastic soda or water bottle and tape it on to the end of the hose.

THE BELL

  • Duct tape

  • File folder or soda bottle with bottom cut off (we use a ketchup bottle) - GET AN ADULT TO HELP YOU

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT BUILDING - THE PROCEDURE!

Shape file folder into cone (or use cut bottle) and attach to non-mouthpiece end of the hose using the duct tape. Buzz your lips inside the hose or mouthpiece. If the hose is long enough you should be able to get several overblowing tones like a bugle.
