Bash the Trash programs for summer camps are fun, audience-participatory, and educational. We offer a range of performances for camps of all sizes. Add hands-on instrument-building workshops for deeper engagement, or go all out with the Green Groove - a performance, instrument-building and a parade! Below are some of the programs we suggest:

LIVE

TRASHAGANZA!

Trashaganza is Bash the Trash’s “swiss army knife” of performances - great on a stage or gym floor; fantastic as an outdoor performance! Trashaganza brings three performers with amazing instruments, fun interactive songs, cool science, and timely environmental messaging about plastic pollution and climate change. Kids love to see how to build the oil can guitar, diddley bow, water cooler drums and styrolin among other strange and weird instruments. Each show ends with an uplifting segment encouraging campers to get involved in the struggle to save our planet. GLOBAL BASH

Global Bash brings different cultural heritages together to create new and beautiful art, while still respecting and celebrating tradition. Your campers will meet three Bash the Trash performers, each from a unique cultural background using a variety of instruments. Through participatory song and personal history campers learn about each of those cultures - and then watch as the performers weave a brand-new musical piece that draws upon all their traditions. We want kids to see that music is a language that has the power to bring people together - a message of unity we hope they will take with them. GREEN GROOVE

Bash the Trash’s Green Groove combines the best parts of all our shows into one big program - performance, instrument-building and a parade! We start with a fast and funny performance that demonstrates the basics of sound, instruments, and instrument building; as well as environmental messages of sustainability, plastic pollution and climate change. Participants then go hands-on to build a variety of age-appropriate instruments from reused materials, and then take it on the road in a noisy, joyous parade! MORE SONGS ABOUT DOGS AND CLIMATE CHANGE

In our newest show we address some tough questions - ‘What is Climate Change? How does it affect me? What can I do about it? How can I be happy in a world that is changing so fast?’ Through participatory music, song and demonstration our three performers will explore some of the tough issues around Climate Change. We’ll also discover how to find joy in our planet - that's what the Dog Songs are there for! Sure, there are some tough things to talk about, and challenges to be met….but luckily whenever things get too difficult - - Dog Song!

SUSTAINABLE SOUNDS

For 30+ years our most popular indoor/outdoor program. Three performers using amazing musical instruments created from trash make connections to science, music, and sustainability - it’s STEAM in action! The program is always fast, funny and age-appropriate. Campers learn how to build their own instruments while discovering the science behind them. Throughout the show we incorporate timely and important information about Plastic Pollution and Climate Change, and how campers can get involved in the fight for our planet. FOUND SOUND SCIENCE

Take a deeper dive into Music, Science and the Environment! Found Sound Science brings three amazing performers playing a clutter of found-object instruments to your school. Students embark on a journey of discovery through sound, vibrations and energy; exploring the secret life of musical instruments and how they work. Using trash as a resource opens a discussion about sustainability and responsibility. This STEAM program is great as a stand-alone performance, or as a follow-up to any of our shows. A full band for bigger audiences, the Junksters features fun songs on lots of cool instruments made from trash, along with connections to science, music and the environment. Bigger and louder for a full camp crowd, with tons of audience participation. RUBBISH RHYTHM

Join Bash the Trash for a mini-show of fun songs and cool demos on wierd instruments made from trash. Our solo artist will take your campers on a wild ride through the science of sound and musical instruments; then explore how reusing/repurposing is good for the planet; and how campers can build their own! GLOBAL PERCUSSION

Explore a world of wonderful percussion instruments! All around the world creative humans have invented thousands of instruments that shake, scrape, clunk, ding and thump. In this show campers will learn about the different kinds of percussion instruments, and see and hear examples made from a wide variety of materials. In an optional add-on instrument-building segment, campers can build some simple percussion instruments from recycled and reused materials that they bring from home, and finally perform a fun short piece. styles of pop and world music as well as develop essential aural and music notation skills. Explore a world of Latin percussion! Rooted in Indigenous cultures, we’ll look at how these instruments have diversified into a dizzying array of wonderful sound-creators, each unique to the culture that created it and the resources available.

BOOM BUCKETS

This hands-on workshop is designed to engage campers of all abilities and musical backgrounds in the art of bucket drumming! Participants will not only have a blast transforming everyday objects like buckets and garbage cans into great sounding drums but will also have the opportunity to experience the power of ensemble playing. Participants will play different styles of pop and world music as well as develop essential aural and music notation skills. TALKING DRUMS

In this fun and participatory workshop campers will discover the connections between language and music, and explore how drums and drumming can communicate and transfer information. The program begins with a mini-performance featuring an Indian double-drum called a Tabla: its history, how it works, how to play it. Campers then learn some simple patterns using vocalizations that connect to drum sounds - in the same way that all tabla players learn from their teachers. In an optional add-on instrument-building segment, campers can build some simple drums from recycled and reused materials that they bring from home, and finally perform a fun short piece.
