The Experimental Orchestra is a 2+ session mini-residency with a solo presenter. Session 1 is a mini-performance with cool and strange musical instruments made from recycled and reused materials, focusing on the science of sound and the families of instruments. In session 2 (or more) students build musical instruments at home using a provided materials list of everyday household items. Depending on which communication technology is used students can interact with the presenter to show their creations, ask questions and share their discoveries. Bash the Trash Residencies (4-22+ sessions) brings highly experienced teaching artists into virtual and in-home classrooms to build an array of musical instruments and compose and perform music. Students use problem-solving, applied knowledge, and community/cooperative skills to build, compose, perform, learn! We work with teachers to incorporate literacy, math, science, and cultural and environmental connections as we progress toward a final “sharing”. First there was the drum! Travel the world, bridge cultures, and learn about the universal language of music with our master percussionist. Instruments such as the Indian tabla, Middle Eastern doumbek, Brazilian pandeiro, and others from a global collection join together in a fun and interactive performance for grades K-8.
